SSLC Exams: Friend or Foe?

We struggled over all the formulas in Algebra, sweated over all the weird names in Geography, and went cross eyed trying to cram in all the dates in History. Yes, we spent what should have been the best year of our high school life slogging it out over THE exam of our lives: the SSC exams.

In any other country, high school is one hell of a joy ride. There is prom to prepare for, yearbooks to be signed and some explosive interschool basketball matches; in fact students live just to attend the final year of high school. Whereas, in our schooling system, or at least those of us who follow the SSC system, after ninth grade a student packs his life away. All PSPs, film DVDs, laptops and outings are firmly shown the door to make room for all the bulky books and guides – a student’s entire life is put on hold just so that nothing can come in the way of exam preparation, (which for some reason has to start two years earlier). After all, it is THE SSC exam and, God forbid, that a student gets anything lesser than 90 %. Never mind the fact that the whole examination format stinks and the syllabus is as ancient as Orkut. (And sorry, adding a few colourful pictures to the textbooks does not constitute as upgrading the syllabus). No, it is THE SSC exam and you don’t dare to mess with it.

Compared to international standards, the whole system seems laughable. But then what other option do we have? We can’t implement the IB education system uniformly over the country; the holistic learning model works only for the privileged few. Which we guess is what the Education Board thinks too, which is why it is bending over backwards making things easy for SSC students. After trying to implement it for the past seven years, the Government has now finally announced the abssolute grading system, under which students will be assessed in terms of grades and will be given a Grade Point Average (GPA), thus ending the mad rush for marks. Which means that it doesn’t matter of you score 71 or 79,
you will come in the same bracket. And don’t they already have the best of five option? Wow, after years of making it the most killer exam ever, SSC has now become about as scary as a class test. Why bother making that much concession? Why not just scrap the exam altogether?

So while the students who will be appearing for the exam next year are busy having a good laugh, we can’t help but feel a bit cheated. During our time, we went through the motions and slogged it out. And if this is how easy they are going make the SSC exam format, then the students will have a hellish time when they are suddenly faced with HSC exams two years later, with no idea of what it is like to put in solid hard work. Be it the HSC exams or the CET, our education system and the sheer number of people appearing for exams is such that at the end of the day marks are the only thing that’s going to save you.

So yes, the Board may be trying to bring about some well intentioned reforms but it all falls short when confronted with the masses of people who appear for such exams. We guess the bottom line is just as the great Aamir Khan has always said, “Jab tak pura system nahi badlega, tab tak kuch bhi nahi ho sakta!”
